It's not a disaster because i have another key, but in my wisdom to fix it, i also tried to find out why the remote locking wouldn't work. Figured the batteries were dead so i took it apart. Batteries are fine, cleaned it out and bent the terminals slightly to make sure of good contact. Still not working.

Am i right in thinking it's lost it security settings when the batteries were removed?

Can anyone tell me how to reprogram the second key?
    It's a '99 TDi SE
    Thanks

To program the remote on a '99 Passat do the following:

1). Switch ignition on with key that is already programmed
2). Manually lock the driver's door with new key / remote.
3). Press the lock or unlock button on the remote.
4). Wait for at least 1 second.
5). Press the lock or unlock button on the remote again.
6). The vehicle horn should now sound.
7). Remove both keys and try.

A maximum of 4 remotes can be programmed.

Up to 1998 Passat remotes can only be programmed with the use of diagnostic equipment.
