A8 - CD, IPod and radio stuck on pause

I have bought a second hand A8 - 55 reg. All is well apart from the CD/radio/iPod which are all stuck on pause. All the functions work, track selection, iPod menu, radio station selection etc but no sound comes out - on the iPod it says "interface pause". The bluetooth telephone connection works - both speakers and mic - apart from the phone book doesn't load from my iPhone 4. Any ideas?

Pausing is done by pressing the small knob in momentarily.
Does this click when you push it?
Does it unpause? - try pushing repeatedly.
Any sign of spilled drink ingress?

The iPhone is recognised in later versions of the MMI software which is an easy update (google "MMI 5570"), but get your problem fixed first.

Thanks but I don't think its that. The knob makes the retractable AMI/satnav screen close and open - that works. That knob also should un-pause by rotating to adjust the volume. Also the steering wheel control won't un-pause it nor will using the larger central knob and the control part of the AMI. None of these make the radio/cd/iPod play.

I bet a fault-code read with VCDS would pinpoint the problem. Maybe something is in "component protection mode". All the devices you say such as Radio, CD, AMI are separate hardware so maybe some sort of intercommunication issue.
