I was trying to rev the engine in neutral to listen to a possible hole in the exhaust.

I noticed that even will full throttle it maxed out at 4200 or so rpm. Is there a limiter in neutral or have I got a more serious problem?

    Thanks

No, itll be limited until you depress the Clutch pedal and release. It will then rev to max. It does this at every first start until clutch operated.

Thanks Alan, learning more and more about this new A3 every day!
The other day, I just noticed it downgraded the speed of the wipers when coming to a stop. All these wee bits are a nice improvement over the older A3.
