Its been power cutting with loads of white smoke when it does - and car seems more loud than other ones i have seen

I have noticed its had the fuel pump changed at some point (breakers yard numbering on it)

So i have been thinking its the pump timing

Took me a while to find out how to do it, but i think i have done it

    basic settings group 04

after 10 seconds it gos to full retard and zone 3 goes from 8degres btdc to around 15degrees

Now should that be around 2 degrees not 15 ?

ps just as a little side note, my car label tag in the boot says i have the AFB engine, but vagcom shows it as AKE.... does it do that or have a had a engine swap?

It should be 2° ATDC ± 2°, after top dead centre, not BTDC. Ignore the label on VAG-COM, it does that.

    ok

I set about doing the timing this morning. i got it to around 1.5 atdc

and it now runs worse!! the most amount of unburnt diesel smoke i have ever seen and it wont rev at all just chucks loads of smoke out?

    confussed i need help!

    heres my vcds

Theres tipex marks every where under the belt cover. I think someones had the belts of and F'ed it up

Its possible that pump timing is now right but cam timing is out?

That is because you have set it advanced (early), not retarded (late).

Yes thats right on the Inj timing. Is it all sorted now? Reason I ask is that I found my injection timing advanced 15 degrees also and it turned out that the cam timing was out as well (by the same amount since it drives the pump). I brought it like that was so don't know whether it was set wrong or had slipped out of sync by a tooth on the crankshaft. Sorting that made it run like an audi instead of a tractor.
So if its not 100% now do at least check the cam timing.

    Thanks luke

It now starts up pretty much straight away instead of about 8 cranks. Doesnt seem to be power cutting now, only a tiny bit of unburnt diesel smoke and now some black smoke, seems to have a fair bit more poke but still seems a bit more tractor sounding then i think a a6 should.

Will have to try and find the proces for checking the cambelt timing and make sure its right.
