    I have VW Passat 2000 1.8 Petrol. I am not able to heat up side view mirrors.

    try putting the mirror switch in the middle position and turning on the heatedrear screen
    A4 2.5 tdi QS (mapped)

    Mirror knob has 3 positions, middle position heats mirrors, people leave it in this position and burn out element, replace mirrors, £14 on ebay!

    pop a mirror out and see if the wires are conected.

    Not if the element is open circuit they wont and the heated rear window has nowt to do with it! (on my 2 passats at least!)

    Yeah, as caldirun said, the vw is a stupid design that is on every time the knob is on the middle. It has nowt to do with the rear demister. On the audi is a much more clever system...
