I've got a clunking coming from the passenger side rear end. It sometimes happens as i slowly set of in first, going over potholes and speed bumps. Almost like a loose rattle sort of clunk.

It has bothered me for months now and i simply cannot identify it. So far i've had the rear droplinks replaced, bush number 8 from here http://www.powerflex.co.uk/i/product...20platform.pdf
as well as both shock absorbers. I've emptied the boot removing the tools and spare wheel and checked the exhaust which seems solid.

Am i missing the obvious or is there something more common with these?

Is one side of the rear of the car lower? Put your fist on the rear tyres and see what the difference is. Mine made this noise, even when stationary I thought someone had bumped into me, got home and one side was lower, took it to VW and they found nothing, car is now level so I'm blaming a dodgey spring??

Assuming it is not the person you have locked in your boot trying to escape, have you checked the exhaust system? it may be damaged or banging against the underside of the car.

The person in the boot makes more a 'bang bang' rather than a clunking sound!

I think TomBoy may have hit the nail on the head though. One side of the car sits lower to the wheel than the other. Would a collapsed spring be making the sort of noise a worn bush would? If so, do these have a top mount which is normally the cause of the sound?

Thats what i assumed but i've bushes replaced and checked for wear. Unless i'm missing something obvious?

One side of the rear does sit lower than the other so just depends whether a collapsed spring would cause such a noise i guess

I've had this sort of symptom before there the spring had a small section brocken off at the end allowing for too much movement.
    Worth a close examination.
