I was having a problem of "Hot Starts" the engine was cranking but would not start as it
    normally does.

Decided to remove & clean the MAF sensor with Isopropl and then Meths. Now OK.

How does a dirty MAF affect Hot Starts??

The hot start problem is normally the starter motor is turning slower than it should and needs to be replaced (mine needs a new one)

cant see that cleaning the MAF would cure mine tho

A failed or dirty AMM should not affect hot starts, which engine code do you have?

What could cause issues with hot starts? My parents car is a bit awkward when starting while hot, but is otherwise perfect.

The reasons vary from one version to another, engine type specific.

    I don't know what the code is, but it's a 54-plate 1.9 TDI 105PS with the 5-speed, SE spec.

Does the starter sound like its turning slowly? Yours is the same engine as mine a BXE it is a very common problem like I've said mines been like it for ages and at some point soon I will replace it

It can't be a BXE, that's 2006 onwards, it has to be BKC. Still, it could be low starter motor RPM, where the cranking speed does not reach the injection point in the ECU's map, first of all you must be sure there are no entries stored on the ECU, so have it fault code scanned first.

It sounds pretty normal tbh. Still, its worth mentioning it next time it's serviced. There's certainly no light on the dash, whether it's gone and stored something anyway is another matter. I'll let them know for next time it goes in, it's not a major issue as you just have to crank it for a bit longer than normal.
