The brakes work fine as do the ABS etc. however if I pump the brakes the pedal gets very hard after maybe two pumps and the brakes dont work very well. Anyone have any idea if this is normal and how it could be fixed.

If its somethign thats going to deteriorate Id like to catch it early.

Sounds like your losing servo pressure, check the pipes for air-leaks first

have u had the common fault of water in bulkhead and recently resolved it , if so your servo could be rusting up inside like mine did after i'd drained bulkhead and removed bungs

    Yeah, sounds like servo failure.

    Quick test:

sit in car with engine off.
pump brake pedal several times - until it goes hard.
keep pressure on the pedal and start the engine.
servo is working if the pedal moves towards the floor.
if not, servo is not operating - check all vac pipes and vac pump before condeming servo.

The servo is definately working and by plenum chamber is water and rust free. I would lean more to a vacum leak and will have a look over it and check the hoses.

When mine did that, I found a small vac pipe had become detached, it was under the fuel filter.
