First post, and its a big one!!

Took my 2005 2.0tdi 140ps in to audi A4 for a glow plug change, and they have quoted me for more or less an engine rebuild (New Head and Block). This is all down to glow plug end cap coming off and rattling around in there.

What i would like to know is; if i'm better off getting a recon engine? How much would this cost? does anyone know a reputible place to get a recon engine? And finally has anyone else had any of the same issues?

My car and family are in the Peterborough area, i'm currently working away with limited phone and internet access, so my misses is dealing with this on her own, so all options advice is very much welcome.

Why does it need a new head and block?Did this happen before they worked on the plugs and when it was running?Seems to me that if its that bad Audi have some responsibility for the plug failure and you deserve substantial help with the cost of some thing that should never have happened in a car of this age

I assume you had some starting issues, so you took it in for the glow plugs replacing? If so it seems like either the garage struggled to get the plugs out in which they should of warned you one of them could of broken, or they broke one and didn't let you know? i don't know, more info please.

Price up a new engine, we did a new BMW engine instead of recon as it was more economical in the long run and worked out at not much more than a re-con.

If the car was running smoothly before taking it in I would be asking questions, how have they arrived at this diagnosis, have they had a boroscope down the glow plug hole?surely it would have mashed up a valve beforehand,I would get a second opinion.

The car was running ok, it was a little slow on start up once or twice. It was the end cap which has broken off. I thought they had broken it on removal and couldnt get all the bits out, but when they took the head off they said it has caused some damge. This says to me that it was broken before it went in?! but surley i would of noticed that rattling out in the pot!

We have found an independant audi specialist to have a look so hope to get a bit of a more realistic quote off of him.

I did have an injector problem about 2 years ago, could this have contiributed to a weakening of the end cap of the glow plug with the hotspoting of fuel? Its all a bit fustrighting as the car has only done 76k, and i have done 50k of those.

Any advice or information on this would be greatly recivied.
