i've got an a4 1.6, with the engine code 'AHL', a replacement lump is proving hard to find, the year before my motor (r plated 98) the eng. code was 'ADP'. What i want to know is if they are interchangable, that is take an 'AHL' out of my car and put an 'ADP' back in? i have the earlier lump lined up and am just waiting to know before buying it. thanks for any input

The ADP is an intermediate shaft engine with a distributor and the AHL does not have an intermediate shaft and uses a coil pack. To use an ADP would involve making many modifications, too many for me to list.

hi i have a 1.6 ALZ 2000, it seams that the 1.6 are very hard to find engine parts for, the same when you buy parts from CAS, or any other parts shop they cost 3 times more than the older ADP, i am in middle of rebuilding my ALZ engine rings, hone etc, as was smoking and steaming out back!

The ADP is pretty much the same engine as Audi used from 1974 with the bore spacing update in 1983.

thanks lads!!!! you have just saved me wasting money, i have just found a 99,000 mls ahl for £250 with a year guarantee so it looks like i'm going for that, also i have found an 'AHL' that the owner says was from a 1.8 passat??????? surely a 1.8 lump would have a different eng code? could it be a tryping errot and meant to read 'ALH'? i am now terribly confused, how many configurations can eng codes have???????

The AHL is a 1.6 100PS petrol used in the Passat from 10/96 to 06/99 and in the A4 from 10/96 to 7/99 so is only used in longitudinal applications. The ALH is a 1.9 90PS TDI used in transverse applications only. The only engine code I have come across where there are two different versions of block is the Polo 6N2 GTI and Lupo GTI where both have the code AVY but are not interchangeable.
