Can anyone tell me where the coolant temperature sensor is on a 1.8T 163 BNB engine? And would this contribute to rough idle.

    Any help would ba appreciated

I would imagine its on the back of cylinder head, green in colour. And there might be second one on bottom radiator hose

From what i have read so far i have gathered that the OEM is black, i have seen the green ones n ebay and amazon as better replacement.

Is the a how to anywhere as im the kinda guy who would pull the wrong thing out and end up making a mess lol.

Would tis be a culprit for rough idle,

I have cleaned the throttle and MAF but still have a reall shakey idle

Did you get a fault code scan done?
As far as I know, black ones were used on 1994-2001 model year Audi. Mine is 2001, but new shape B6, and it has 2 temp sensors, green and grey. Different engine, but sensors are same. I had scan done ( netbook+cheap cable) and the one at radiator came up as faulty. That's grey sensor. I got new one, but didn't replace it yet. My car is a bit rough on idle too, so will see if sensor will fix it. Might do it today and will post an update

The gauge is sitting dead centre, the code rad threw up the sensor, didnt take the TB off as i read about the realignment and i wont have a vagcom till next week, i got my 9 year old to keep his foot on the gas with the ignition on which opened up the butterly ( as its drive by wire) it has cured the irratic idle but as i say it runs rough as a bears ****. The only other code was the one quoted above and i have read on some of the yank forums that this was a common cause of rough idle aswell.

    All help is appreiated guys!
