Newbie Manual Gearbox Help Please

Hi guys

Just brought a 2004 saloon for not alot
My Engine is a 1.9tdi 130 AVF and my Gearbox is a GVS

I have a couple of gearbox related questions if I may,

1) Previous owner drove the car with their hand resting on the gear knob and as a result the knob rattles. Anyone with any idea what parts to replace to shut it up ?

2) There is a whine coming from the box when the car is in gear. Load makes no difference to the noise. My question is any idea whats causing this noise ?

Hi there - Glad you bought for not a lot...... I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if gearbox whining it'll be the bearings in the gearbox - I had same problem and had two bearing replaced - Cost £650 quid just to recon the box (6 speed are prone to this), that was on top of the bill to remove the box - I had new drive shafts, dual mass and cluth at same time along with an oil service and cost around 2k - sorry - I hope your's isnt this!!!!

I don't suppose that they stated what bearings they replaced.
I 'll take the box out myself and recon the box just need to know what bearings will be the cause

Pinion bearings, I'm sure - Make sure do them both as useless <removed> that did mine only did one and it had to go back in - Was sweet after that - Good luck, but get a professional answer first
