    Hello VW fans

I am trying to solve a problem for my daughter who runs a W reg 1.4 16v Polo auto. There is an intermittant stalling problem with the car which usually occurs after a lengthy run. The local VW dealer couldn't find a fault so she took it to a diagnostic man who came up with fault code 1314 but for some reason didn't explain what this meant.

PS. This is my first post and although I don't have a VW at present - I am always looking on ebay for a mint Scirocco. I had a 1988 1.6GT for years and did 200k in it. (best cars ever made)

    Cheers

Here is what the Ross Tech Wiki says on this....
Go to http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/...ry:Fault_Codes for more info. Personally I think this sounds unlikely for an intermittant stalling problem. Therefore I think you may have two problems, the first being the stalling problem the second being a possible comms problem (as below).

For the stalling, look into / search on.
    Coolant temperature sensor
    and
    Throttle body cleaning / alignment.

Hopefully some of the Pro mechanics on here will come along and answer this properly.

01314 - Engine Control Module: No Communications

    Possible Causes

    • CAN-Databus Wiring/Connectors from/to Engine Control Module faulty
    • Fault(s) stored in Engine Control Module
    Possible Solutions

    • Check CAN-Databus Wiring/Connectors from/to Engine Control Module
    • Check Measuring Value Blocks (MVB)
      • Usually Measuring Value Blocks (MVB) 125+ show the current Communication Status

01314 - Engine Control Module: Check DTC Memory

    Possible Causes

    • Fault(s) stored in Engine Control Module
    Possible Solutions

    • Check Engine Control Module for Fault Codes
    Special Notes

    • Engine Control Module stored a Code which influences other Control Modules Functionality

    Hi George,

Did you eventually get this problem sorted / get to the bottom of it?

    Cheers

    Hi Al,

Yes it got soted out. The throttle pot needed cleaning. Apparently it's a common problem on Fiats as well - a gum/varnish builds up in the throttle pot which stops the butterfly valve from allowing the small amount of air to get past. This is why it only happens at idle.

Thanks kindly.. I plan to give that a go.

I've also purchased a replacement 4-pin coolant temparature sensor. Sure, it's £34 but I'm keen to try everything possible myself before handing it over to a garage with their wallet-trembeling hourly rates! It's hard to justify spending £££ on a car that's only worth £1,200 tops!

This car was running perfectly before I took it into the garage.. I can't be sure if it's something they've done becuase it took 2 weeks for this problem to start happening

    Hi,

I cleaned the throtle body and replaced the 4-pin temp sender and it appears to have sorted it.. I won't feel 100% confident I've got it licked until I've driven the car without issue for at least a week!

I also discovered that the small pipe that's attached to the throttle body goes off to some form of valve which in turn is connected to what looks like a charcoal filter unit (in the front of the driver's side wing). The charcoal filter unit was just hanging loose on it's side.

I re-mounted this vertically as it should be. I wonder if this is something the garage displaced when they were changing the cambelt?! As this pipe effectively feeds air to the engie when the throttle body butterly is closed, I'm wondering if the charcoal filter malfunctions if placed on it's side, not allowing any air through?
