After all my drama with the engine speed sensor, the car seems to be going well apart from the speedo, with intermittently does some wild back and forward sweeps then drops to zero. Then starts working again. Once again the Haynes manual is inadequite, it shows the removal of the sender for a manual gearbox, however does not mention the auto!
I see their are a couple of two wire connectors on top of the auto gear box, which are likely suspects, does any one know how the speed gets it's data on an 01M auto gear box?

    Thanks for your help.

    Regards

    Angus

The road speed signal sensor for the speedo (there is a separate one for the gearbox ECU) is located on top of the gearbox over the diff and the drive gear is actually also the diff oil level dip stick. The three pin connector on the sender (which is screwed on top of the drive gear) has a brown/white (pin 1, negative), white/blue (pin 2, signal) and black (pin 3, power) going to it and this runs onto the inner wing where it runs into the car. Check this wiring for damage.

Thanks Crasher, finally got round to sorting this. I found the plug and note it had no spring clip on it! I guess driving round the earthquake damaged streets of Christchurch NZ finally shook it off!

    All sorted now!

    Regards

    Angus
