Whosh noise and then no power! Now can't drive without kangaroo motion and smoke!

Audi A3 Sportback TDI 140, 05 plate 65k miles/ well looked after and good condition.

With no prior warning of lights etc, driving gently up a hill changing into 3rd gear, a whoosh noise of either air or fluid occurs. Shortly after power is much less and it can't get beyond 1st gear without missing and hiccuping like its about to stall - but doesn't. Stopped car immediately but no warning lights have come on either.
As car was stopped outside a friends's garage, we wheeled into his car lift to look under - no sign of anything untowards such as fluid spills etc.

There is a whirring noise that rises as you rev the engine, and there is a distinct increase in smoke from exhaust. The friend's thoughts are it might be the turbo blown or alternator. Waiting for trasport to a garage on Monday with hope that it's not TOO expensive a problem!!

We did find that is was very low on oil (and have topped it up) despite no oil waring light coming on as it usually does before a top up.

Any suggestions??

Hi, if this is the problem, with my very limited knowledge....is this easy or expensive to fix generally?

Car back from the garage today - apparently a disconnected intercooler tube ( which I think may be same as what you reckoned?) In any case a temp fix is in place until a new hose arrives for fitting. Thanks for the advice.
