i have read before that its a big job changing the thermostat on the 2.5tdi, i have the front of the car up on stands as im investigating why my alternator drive belt came off, so the carrier will be going into the service position.

can the thermostat be changed without having to remove the timing belt and removing the service carrier??

According to Audi you can do it by sliding the belt almost off of the right hand bank pulley but I have never been able to do it this way so I just take the belt off once I am in there.

thanks for the reply crasher, when you say 'according to audi' have you read this somewhere? i have no idea whats involved so how does sliding the belt almost off assist with changing the thermostat?

have you changed many stats on the 2.5 tdi?

The thermostat is behind a long cover held on with three M6 bolts. The cover is behind the timing belt so the belt has to be brought forward to allow the housing to be removed, on some engines Audi say that they can be done by sliding the belt forwards on the pulley, personally I can't find enough room to do this. I always fit a new thermostat when I do the timing belt on one of these as they are prone to failure.

thanks matey, the thermostat is gone and the timing belt aint due for a while, whether a new thermostat was fitted 48k ago with the timing belt i dont know, maybe it was and they never used an audi one. If you were not able to get into the thermostat without removing the belt then i think i would be best just leaving it for the moment.

Don't think my thermostat was changed - but I'm planning to get it done (along with water-pump) next year. It rarely works, however when under load and pulling a trailer it springs into life and reaches 90 degrees! If it's any consolation the 2.5 TDI rarely overheats as long as you're using G12 and it's at the right level courtesy of twin cooling fans.
