Assuming we're talking about the same area (bulkhead where battery is located)? This is a well-known fault that is responsible for damaging brake-servo, etc. There are two rubber grommets in the base of the bulkhead under the wiper motor. You'll need to remove rubber strip and plastic trim in engine bay to access. Remove the rubber grommets completely to clean. Using a mild detergent, clean the area thoroughly then hose it clean. Only re-insert the grommets, once you've removed some of the rubber in the middle, or exactly the same thing will happen again.

Dont know if its raining hard where you are but if so and the car is out with blocked drains you are going to have water overflowing into the car

I had a similiar issue when I had a Superb. The seal at the bottom of the pollen filter had perished. I believe that the lay out is the same might be worth checking this, I fixed it with plumbers mate putty using as a seal.

it's not uncommon to just push the grommets out completely and leave them out. Much less chance of them blocking up again.

That was the solution suggested in the Audi tech bulletin - car on ramp - just pull the buggers out

Interesting, as they assured me the bulletin was to remove them! Not sure whey there'd be fumes in that area though.....nor should there be any leaking down below if the exhaust is all in good shape....
