Hi had my cambelt water pump and stat changed by the dealers about 3 months ago problem is temp on dash does not hit 90 always just under drive it hard can get to 90 bit then falls back just under could it be the stat stuck open changed the temp sensor for a genuine green one before the dealer did the work so can a state go bad that quick

yes mate stats can go bad at any time i have had them straight out of the box stuck open . does the car take forever to reach just under 90c if so then your stat is stuck open . one more thing to keep in mind is that it as been a bit cooler as of late this will have an effect on your warming up time . but you should still get to 90c and stay there as long as you have not got your heater on full flow and at high temp just remember there is no given time for any new part to fail

it does not sound like there is anything wrong with your car its all the short trips the engine is not getting properly hot regardless of what your temp gauge says . i have got a 2004 1.9 tdi 130 bhp i can fly down the motorway with it up to 90c but if i stop in traffic the temp goes down slightly especialy in the colder months . its all to do with diesel being far more thermally efficient than petrol engines . when it is realy cold like last winter it used to take my car about 5 or 6 miles on the motorway to get fully warm

Once you're warmed up it should stay at 90. All the 10+ VAG cars I have owned have never fluctuated from 90 regardless of driving conditions.

    Hi,

I suffered with a temp guage that hovered between 50c - 90c for about 2 years!

To start off with I changed the temperature coolant sensor.. no joy. I then did some digging on this forum to find people suggesting changing the thermostat.

I changed the thermostat and my car now hits 90c and stays there no matter what kind of driving I'm doing. I'll bet it's that!

Here's a guide on how to do it on a 1.8T but the process is just the same for the 1.9 TDI (the thermostat is located just below the alternator).
    http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?1730221

it's about a 1.5 hour job start at finish at my amateur level! That's dicounting the hour I spent trying to recover the bolt I dropped from the thermostat housing

    Toff.
