Yep.....snow socks are good enough on snow.....snow tyres are a better all rounder though....even on dry tarmac when its cold they'll grip very well. Snow socks can ONLY be used when there is snow on the road...they'll shred as soon as you hit tarmac again. But 35 squid is indeed a steal...!

Agree with you Keithuk with regards to driving in snow in the UK. I have never had any training but have travelled to work over the moors for the past 15 years and have had some mornings where I've hit the roads before the snow ploughs have and although the roads have been closed officially I've managed to get through in my old Golf Match. The only time I had difficulty last year was on our housing estate in about 6" of snow and a steepish slope to the motorway where icy conditions stopped me. Oh and no I don't remember 1963 as I wasn't born until '72 ....

Sounds like privileged should be renamed as part of the Confused group! So long as the steel wheels are the same size as one of the wheels VW spec for the car the should NOT be classed as a modification and hence there should be no extra premium. I'd ask to speak to one of their managers....not one of the call center muppets who don't seem to know the facts...

as one of the "better safe than sorry" brigade I checked with Saga (yes I know - old git) and told them that it was my intention either to fit winter tyres to my alloys, or to obtain VW steel wheels and use them.
I also told them that the tyres - as recommended & supplied by a main VW dealer - would be H rated, as opposed to my existing V rated summer tyres and I got an email back confirming that either option was acceptable and would not be treated as a modification.

Apart from driving the car and filling up the screenwash or checking the oil, I know very little about cars other than if it goes wrong I find somebody to fix it.
I've got MK6 SE 09 plate with alloys (Seattle I think which was an upgrade) and my current tyres are 225/45 R17 91W (I can at least read the tyre wall).

I would like to go down the winter tyres route but aren't sure what to go for and what is going to be viable. Not bothered about having alloys as steel will be a lower cost.
Can you give me some advice please?

Last year I enquired at the local dealers (when they hadn't wised up to the sales opportunity) and was told "sorry sir we don't have them in your speed rating".

    Kabooom,

VW recommend the following sizes for a Golf:-

    195/65R15 91T

    205/55R16 91H

If you search Percymon's posts I think he went from 225/45R17's down to 195/65R15 last year and got on well with them.

Another good search option is www.mytyre.co.uk They do complete wheels and tyres and you can input your own car details and they will give you a list of wheels and tyre sizes that will suit.
