    Hi Everyone

My brother in law has a new Tiguan and is getting winter tyres on 15" wheels for £795 the set from VW. Does anyone know if the same offer is available for the Golf? I can't find it on Vw site hence the query.

    Hi noonoo,

Obviously your choice, however I found it much more cost effective to do a bit of price comparison and then to buy my winter tyres through an independant supplier, in my case Costco in Springburn, Glasgow, but first sourcing a set of second-hand 15" steel rims and covers for my 2009 Golf TDI GT.
That said, going the VW route certainly has the advantage of being a simple "one-stop" shop.

If you do a search in this forum you'll find at least a couple of threads debating the value of winter tyres and where to get them.

    WeegieBob.

Quite a lot to pay IMO. You're better of buying a used set of standard Passat or Golf MK5 (etc) wheels from eBay then just getting the tyres separately.

Thanks WeegieBob. My main dealer wants £109.53 per tyre so will definately do a bit of research first.

I recently bought a set of Goodyear Ultragrips from MyTyres for £60 each, however, had I read the website more thoroughly I'd have noticed they did complete wheels for another £40 each. As it was I paid £80 for a set of steels off e-bay, 120 round trip miles / half a day to collect 'em, more time cleaning 'em up, plus £40 (and another 2 hours) to have the tyres fitted.
So not much in it really!

VW is probably specifying the Dunlop Winter Sport tyre , which is very well rated in the winter tyre tests.

I went down the route of buying soem used Mk5 steel wheels (can't remebr how much but under £30 from recollection, with worn tyres and wheel trims), and then fitted Niokian WR+ 195/65/15 88T tyres. If they are good enough for 50% of the cars in Lapland they are good enough for me (£65 eache fitted).

Neevr failed me last winter, did 9k miles on them and barely any wear - they were a lot more comfortable than my 17" summer alloys, quieter, 10% more mpg. Can't lose really provided you have space to store wheels.

You should be able to geta set of four good tyres and steel rims for under £450 - check out www.mytyres.co.uk and select 'wheel sets' from the left hand menu - they sell correct fitment steel wheels and a whole host of tyre optons.

Don;t forget to tell your insurance company.

Thanks for info. If I put on the same size wheels do I still have to tell my insurance company?
