After trawling the web to try and understand what was involved in replacing a clutch switch on my 2007 A4, I could find very little information, and after all the help I've received from Sarge, Yemi and A8 tech, I've made a guide which might help others on their quest to repair their A4's suffering from "Clutch Switch Failure" :-)

It's quite interesting to note how different the new improved clutch switch is, far more robust than the factory fitted version.

I'm not saying this is the same switch or process for all A4's, however this was the case for my 2007 2.0tdi 170 avant. It might help you along the way

I hope someone finds this useful.

    This has got me thinking................

all of my reversing sensors click when the car is in reverse so it would appear that they're all working.
    My reverse lights work fine.
But sometimes when I engage reverse I get a long error sound, or nothing at all. So my sensors don't always work properly.

I'm wondering if my clutch switch could be faulty?
Would a faulty switch cause intermittent errors when selecting reverse?

I'm pretty sure you are NOT meant to touch the pedal whilst installing the switch - it's def like that with VW's brake switches

edit - don't twist the switch into place with the pedal depressed

    Hi all,

Just done this service yesterday - took the best part of 10 mins - its pretty simple bar the knee panel a bit tricky cause the screws are slightly angled. Twist counter clockwise clicks twice its out - put the new switch in exactly as the old one came out and pow all done.

£15 inc. Vat @ 20% genuine part 10 mins work better than the figures they quoted me at the dealers...

Thanks to all for posting great posts to aid in the service - good look!!!

Nicely done, Pdlh. After replacing what I thought was the clutch switch (twice), I found your post and realized I was replacing the starter control switch. Thanks to you, I have now done the job right and cruise control is working again.

    Much appreciated.

How many miles are you all at with your cars? I recently fitted cruise @ 57k. Wondering when this is likely to happen.

I don't know that the issue is related to the number of miles precisely, I fitted cruise at 67k miles and the switch had already failed, for all I know it could have failed at 10k, as the car did not have cruise, the previous owner would not have known it was an issue. The one thing that seems a dead certain from various posts on this forum in the past year is the likelihood of a clutch switch failure on a late 56 reg, 07 and 57 is almost guaranteed. It's just a matter of time. It really seemed Audi bought a bad batch of switches from their supplier. More so, they have kind of admitted it was as issue by making the replacement switch you purchase from the dealer look like it has been seriously redesigned and improved.

The cruise would not work and the engine tends to over rev on gear changes.
