Wait until the MK7 a car in which they may have ironed out the faults of the current one and where VW may have regretted the cost cutting they did to produce the MK6.

Bet that finance offer wont be available on the Mk7... and also to add that my Mk6 is the best spec'd and most reliable VW I have ever had, so I've not seen the cost cutting mentioned... 16k and not been back to the dealers yet.. My MK5 and Passat B6 were VERY well known in the VW service dept....

Not really...they are company cars so no skin off my nose. VW service was excellent, and I always have had a replacement car from them (Mk5 had 2x steering racks, 2 x bearings, aircon compressor, various electrical, plus others. Passat B6 had new DSG box at 3k, replaced parking sensors, new stereo, etc)... Had a Passat B5 previousley which was faultless.... I used to do 40 k a year, a bit less now.... My Mk6 is 6 months old, has nearly 17k on and has been faultless... I'd say its a big improvement on quality, epecially wiht the amount of extra gadgets that could go wrong...

I stuck with VW cos I like the cars.. they feel quality when driven. The focus , Astra et al just dont compare in my opinion

They may have cut costs but the prices are a joke. Its a small hatchback at the end of the day.

Feeling 'quality' and actually being of quality are then obviously of different meaning to VW. I'd rather have a car that has intrinsic quality and not a load of show and feel, based on some sound proofing and 'bling'.
It is a shame that people have such a cavalier attitude to cars just because they haven't had to shell out their own money for these expensive cars a for example I have had to.

However I don't think that VW are now alone in asking ridiculous prices for their cars as the obvious competition does not seem that much different in price. We have to look to S.Korea for cheaper cars, that might be more reliable although not having that feeling of faux quality.

One of the reasons for the high prices must be the exchange rate between the €uro and the £ with the pound now about 20% lower than five years ago making imports to the UK more expensive. I think that VW held off corresponding increases in the UK for some considerable time. So perhaps they are playing catch-up?. Not that I'm defending them. I agree that the current prices are too high- over £22,000 for my 2.0 GT (140) Tdi in April this year.
As for HHGTTG's comments about faults on the mark 6 Golf, perhaps someone would like to start a new thread so that owners can add comments on their experiences. If there are sufficient reports about the same fault or problem it may encourage VW to do some remedial work before the mark 7 appears.

I have just been having a look at the Toyota Auris, while its looks don't inspire me , entry level price is £12,995, 5 year 100,000 mile warranty a 1.3l engine with 100bph and lets be honest while Toyota have had their troubles(which manufacturer hasn't) japanese cars win reliabilty surveys year after year.

A friend of mine has just clocked up 114,000 in a civic, other than servicing nothings broken, all electrics still work perfectly.

Another friend of mine is on his 3rd Skoda and frankly it feels better made and better finished than the Golf.

VW's and reliability are a bit like the American dream.
