(This is assuming you have full drive select with adjustable suspension, steering etc)
I definitely notice the dampers and steering in particular, changing whilst driving in "auto". If I'm pootling about on the Motorway, I can feel the car relax around me, the steering gets lighter and the suspension softens. If I drop down a couple of gears and take an exit with gusto, I instantly feel the car go tight, the suspension stiffens and the steering will both tighten up and change the lock ratio.
It does need a bit of oopfh to make it happen but it is very noticeable.
In "auto", the suspension, for example, will constantly adjust from almost as soft as "comfort" to almost as stiff as "dynamic". There's a graph somewhere which I know I've posted before, probably on this forum, showing how it changes. The suspension will also adjust whilst in "comfort" and "dynamic" modes, just with a bias towards either end of the scale.
For example, the road leading to my house is cobbled - a few metres down the road, you can physically feel the jolts and bumps from the (lumpy) cobbles reduce dramatically as the suspension softens to absorb the impacts better.
If you just have drive select and the sport differential, then you should still feel the steering assist (but not lock) change. To really feel the sport differential having any effect, you will, as stated above, need to seriously attack some corners - preferably on a track. The effect is very noticeable when it happens mind you
