I am a bit intrigued by stories from golf owning friends many of whom have had endless problems with, window mechanism, locks, door handles air con and so on. It seems that the VW's built in Germany have the best record of reliability and those made in Spain & Brazil the worst. Am I right?

I've had problems with both locks and windows, but they are controlled by ECU's and door modules (electronic stuff). No matter where the car has been built, chances are these parts will be made somewhere else (e.g. China) - production is labour intense. VW has been producing them (I don't know for how long though) in China and many people complain about the MK5+ models being very faulty because of this.

How do you trace where it was produced anyway?
