I'd start with a new coolant cap myself unless it's a weekly top up.

Not wanting to throw you out, but once an engine comes apart it's never the same.

Update - Cylinder head tested and hairline crack found which passes coolant when under pressure. New head ordered from VW - estimated cost for full job about £2,000 - JCT 600 have said that they will try to get the warranty company to pay, but if not, they will foot the bill again. I have been looked after by JCT 600, but at 60K this seems to be a bit of a drastic failure! Not a good start with my B6 - I think I will be buying another warranty when this one runs out.

Further update - got car back after 2 weeks - new head, new valves and cams - warranty company picked the bill up. JCT were supposed to charge me 14 days @ £6.50 + VAT for the courtesy car insurance, but only charged me £30 all in as I had been inconvenienced, so overall excellent service from JCT 600. However, car is back in on Tuesday - engine rough on cold start - white smoke evident (unburnt fuel?) so assume glow plug failure - perfect once it has run for 30 or 40 seconds, so hoping it is a glow plug or two. I'm so pleased to have my car back after running around in a Peugeot 206 petrol for 2 weeks - but 3rd class riding is better that 1st class walking.

Good god! is that JCT Bradford? when W lived in England we dealt with Richard Alexander Huddersfield before I emigrated. they were reasonable. but the main dealers local to me are simple braindead! hard enough to get them to do warranty or recall work never mind foot the bill!

Hi - No it was JCT 600 Peugeot in Hull (there is also a JCT 600 VW in Hull) - the workshop manager stated that JCT 600 had a good reputation and that he would ensure that this continued. My daughter is starting driving soon and when it's time to get her a car, JCT 600 will be my first port of call. They have spent in excess of £2500 on the car (£2,000 via the warranty company) and £500 which they paid (and even this was out of the 30 day initial warranty) for a new EGR cooling jacket. Even during the 30 day initial warranty I went back several times with little paintwork jobs - no problems at all - they bent over backwards to sort the issues out. All in an exemplary service.

Final update - Car was sent to VW to sort out white smoke issue and rough idle when cold - new injector seals fitted and injectors 're-calibrated' - problem solved. Car now running great. No charge for courtesy car again whilst mine was at VW - same good service. Hopefully no more coolant loss!

Sounds like I am in the same boat as you, noticed I had water loss on my 07 Passat 2.0tdi. Car has been to Des Winks VW Scarborough to diagnose this fault (had dye put in the expansion tank). To my surprise the car came back with new injectors (done foc )and also had to rebook to get egr cooler sorted. So today whilst the car being delivered back didnt start well then it broke down, back to Des Winks and apparently there is no fault codes or any problems on the system. I am having no problems with the garage I bought the car from, in fact they could not be any more helpful and they are booking and taking the car to Vw on my behalf and dealing with the warranty company also. Add to this the parking brake that wouldnt come off (another visit to VW to get sorted) new switch and all appears OK. Not a very good 3 months since buying the car.

Hi - My car is now running absolutely spot on - no more coolant loss (never moves) - hope your issue is just with the EGR coolant jacket and not the head as mine was - long job with the testing and ordering of parts etc. This is my 3rd and possibly last Passat - I don't like the way in which my SE model has fewer extras than my old one - no puddle lights. no auto aircon etc - they have cut costs too much. Anyway, I'm hoping for at least 4 years of trouble free motoring now.

I believe the dealerships earn (probably) some very welcome income from VW for carrying this campaign work. While I'm sure all of us affected are at least grateful for this FOC campaign, I for one would want to be consulted before a dealership carried out any extra 'unplanned' work... there was a thread a few days ago about a dealer carrying out this work on a Passat stuck on the ramps with an otherwise unresolved oil pump problem, FFS!
