VW Golf 1.4 1999 has a motorized accelerator so pressing the accelerator while the engine is off will only open partial the butterfly. if you look where the cable connects to the throttlebody you can manually turn the springloaded valve by hand thats the way to open it when engine is off. but besides that give it a proper clean and see how you go (Also the square plate just pulls off once you have disconnected the 2 pipes it just sits on a rubber bung and the throttlebody bolts through it)
Thank you for this, I will have a go at taking it apart on Saturday now, as only time I will have with daylight hours. One point to make is that last weekend my friend actually pressed the acceleration whilst the engine was running, held at 2000 revs but still had to force the butterfly coin down with a screwdriver. Wonder if this could be the start of a faulty throttle body or just its behaviour.

Sorry, & thanks. To add to my conundrum of questions, as this car wasn't serviced in a long time, I.e spark plugs were shocking when I changed them, I would imagine the fuel filter is probably no longer fit for purpose. I think I might change that too. Just googled & realised it under the car!! They dont make things easy do they!

The fuel filter is actually much easier to change than it sounds. It's right at the edge of the floorpan and just in front of the right side rear wheel. Some fuel will spill out when you remove the old one though.

If you're not sure when the car's been serviced, I suggest you also change the oil and filter, engine air filter and the cabin air filter. I did the whole works for mine and even changed the gearbox oil and power steering fluid. Changing the brake fluid every 2 years or so is also a good idea, since it will gather condensation which can rust and jam your calipers.

I attempted the fuel filter yesterday but gave up after being unable to remove the jubilee clip as the screw had corroded. So I waited till today, bought a new jubilee clip as I was going to cut through the existing one. Found a great video on you tube too. First Remove Fuse no 29 (15 Amp - engine electronics ) from UK cars, start engine and car will stall,(switch off) then remove fuel filler cap, to release pressure, then undo the metal catch & the jubilee clip. Then carefully with a screwdriver press the button down on top of the fuel pipe on either side of the air filter and prise it back. Job Done. Insert new filter, fuse & cap back on, ignition on for 10 seconds to build fuel pressure, then start car. Bingo (check filter for leaks) 15 min job max. The old filter hadnt been changed in years.

Going to wait till Saturday before I attempt removing & cleaning the throttle body as I dont have enough daylight hours in the week after work. One question I have is Ive read somewhere that if the throttle body is removed it might need re-tuning back again via a VCDS, is this correct? In light of this is it a good idea to remove & clean the throttle body & breather pipes.

To be honest matey, it really doesnt make that much difference unless someone has been playing with it on VAG, just take it off and clean it, when i did mine there was no difference between the reprogramme. the big difference comes when you clean it and it works again ^^

Well after thinking id fixed everything on the Golf i decided to get the MOT done and dusted so booked her in this morning and had a slot at 2pm *YaY* went out to the car started her up and hmm smoke *Swearing* decided that i should go ahead with the MOT to determine wether it is oil burning. Had a word with the mechanic and asked him to do the emmissions test 1st because the rest wouldnt matter otherwise. "Fail" oil burning again, the problem is also my piston rings. so although i gave a mighty try i really have washed my hands with this car i have no real wish to strip the engine out and get it rebored along with a full new set of rings. So after much thinking it has now taken its place in car heaven. i could of sold it to someone but i hate those people who stitch you up, so the best thing for it was to scrap it £170 lol better than nothing i suppose. i could of spent ages stripping it and selling bits but to be honest it really wouldnt of made that much bodywork was crap and engine knackered. So now i have £210 with £40 saved on MOT he gave it me free now to start saving again and try to get a half friggin decent car

That is such a shame. But you prob did the right thing, I only paid £300 for mine, also emissions failure, not sure how it passed, but now stands me at £600 after MOT tax & over £100 on bits & pieces replaced in the car. if your car hasnt gone yet I'd be interested in lots of bits, they sell for much more than you think on eBay, but I know what u mean about the hassle of stripping it. I think i will sell mine in January before the tax expires in feb. It was s first car for the mrs who just passed, think that will give her sufficient experience before she moves on to a autobox

Took apart throttle body this morning, 1 hour to remove everything. Also removed lower plate, the passage to one of the breather pipes blocked with grime rock solid in there, the rest of it disposable too. Cleaned throughly like new, took 2 hours cleaning properly. Put everything together in 10 minutes. More responsive but!!! On deceleration still jerky and now on clutch lifting little jerky too. Could it be a sensor? Or a different issue? Hmmmm

Adapting sequence for the throttle valve must be performed if:
The throttle valve control unit has been removed and installed or possibly cleaned
