AUDI A4 Avant 1998, 1.9 TDI 110 with 148K, AFN engine DHF gearbox.

I must admit I did not like VAG cars that much before I got this old Audi less then a year ago with 135K. The reason I’ve got it is because ‘apparently they are very economical’. Since then I’ve replaced some bits on it but nothing major. I start to like it that much so that I’ve taken it this summer to Croatia on holiday instead of my BMW 525 D. Two tanks made around 1400 miles! Well, when I got back nearly 5000 miles after I’ve decided to do a test on what mpg can I get if I really take it easy driving to work an back 40+ miles every day half in town and half motorway.

I was very, very surprised to se 69.8 after total of 520 miles!!! I’ve been taking pictures of dash as mileages piled up.

I am not trying to show of with this and it is not been set up by resetting it and taking picture quickly. I was just wondering why people bother with Smart if they could have better drive and MPG out of a car for less then £1000.

And not to forget, I was not the slowest car on the road, just under the speed limit!

Some very impressive MPG figures for your Audi.

For what it's worth I tend to take what the onboard computer tells me with a major pinch of salt! Like you I've seen 68-69 MPG on the display, but in real life I.E. fill up to fill up the true MPG drops to closer to the 51-54MPG. But then our Audi has just hit the 200K mile mark so may be a little tired.

I've just pulled the 1.9 TDi off the road for a major overhaul (delayed due to a few more electrical issues with the replacement car, a B5 2.5TDi Avant)

    Kind Regards.

    Paul.

Mine is 1.9 110. I've started with around 3/4 of tanks and done 520 miles. The light did not come on but had to put some more as I was going early in the morning to the airport. This sounds OK for £45 at 1.37£ per liter.

I could get 99.9 miles to the gallon out of my 2.5 V6 petrol ford Cougar, but that was only if I reset the computer while I was rolling down a very steep hill doing about 70 out of gear lol.
Wow that is economical, that is better than a blue motion. there is someone on here with a volkswagen bluemotion thread who is complaining about how juicy it is, I think if you put that on his thread he would end up doing a straight swop lol

I have a 1.6 petrol b5 a4 but can get it up to around 40 to the gallon but it takes some doing.
Funny you should say about a smart, I had a nearly new smart roadster a few years ago and I would have trouble getting 50 to the gallon and you had to run it on the high octane dear stuff, plus they also normally need a complete engine rebuild by the time they reach 60,000 and the build quality is quite bad, with really cheap plastics, and I dare not mention Merc main dealers as it puts my blood pressure through the roof lol

The AFN engine is the most efficient engine VAG built to date, it's allmost 5% more efficient than the new 2.0 CR engine and i would want to see how well the new lump fares after 100k when the emissions malarky will start to break down. It's hard to better it when stakes are raised this high !

I am surely well impressed with it. I've done the calculation and it worked out to be about OK. I cannot ask for anything better - £45 gives you over 520 miles - probably around 550+. Needles to say the new vehicle exhaust system with DPF and other components cost more then 2K to replace and like mentioned in previous post it does not last over 100K. I will stick to this old vehicle until it breaks beyond repair. Saying this I would like 2002 Avant but not sure how good they are on economy and reliability. Perhaps someone could comment. They are 1.9 as well but heavier then old estate so probably not as good. How reliably are they?

Same, '97 110 AFN 1.9TDi. I don't have a DIS so have to go by what ever I put in the tank vs. miles on the trip computer. I get about 50 - 55, up to 58 if I do exclusively motorway miles. I've just put the 205000th mile on my Avant, I think at this point it's done so many revs that it probably would run without oil.

I actually quite fancy a new car, but I need it to completely die before I could justify spending more for a less efficient car.

It depends what would you consider 'dead car'. Somebody I know managed to get AFN engine and turbo replaced in A6 for less then £500 including parts. The good engine and turbo cost around 250. It would cost you a lot more to re calibrate an injector on modern car.

I've had a problem with gearbox. Got a good box and 2 weeks old clutch for £90. A Tyre on my BMW costs more.

i went to glasgow and back (150 miles round trip) driving with economy in mind at 60 mph and refuelled when i got back 9.2 litres went back in 72 mpg i believe that is. But usually knocking around i get 57 or so again driving gently.

I have an octavia 03 1.9 tdi ALH with egr disconnected and valve and inlet mannifould soaked and cleaned. fresh service new airfilter etc etc
