I've owned my 2004 1.9tdi quattro sport avant for just over a month now. I drive mainly dual carriage way on my daily commute with some town driving roundabouts and traffic lights etc. Its approx 20 mile each way.
I filled up costing approx £75 which was approx 55 litres. I got near enough 500 miles to the fuel warning light coming back on so I guess i'm roughly getting 41 mpg.
Does that sound good or bad? I try to drive keeping the revs really low and dont accelerate heavy.

My commute is around 17 miles each way, mixture of some town driving and motorway and I normally get 42-43mpg from my 53 plate 1.9tdi quattro. This is measured between fill ups as the DIS reads about 5% high. I normally get between 530-550 before the fuel warning light comes on.

I was expecting more to be honest when I bought the car, but it seems about right for a quattro and my car has done 119k.

Mileage has nothing to do with the fuel economy, the b6 1.9 tdi quattro was not built to be economical, the old b5 quattro was ! Folks i know are strugling to get 45mpg in a FWD pd engined passat so if you get 45Mpg that's alright. I get 40-45Mpg in a v6 tdi quattro and people call them thirsty !

    - where did you find this out?

I've owned both, currently the b6 and get about 42-43,m 520-540 miles from a tank, which is about the same as the b5 used to get.

    I get 480 to 520 per tank
This is mainly to work and back around 30 miles per day 60% urban 40% motorway
Recent run to France returned 550 miles
Remember the quattro tank is smaller than the fwd tank

Please tell us as this seems a bold statement and untrue

Other thing to bear in mind is fuel, forgetting about the "posh" fuels for a moment (ultimate/V-power etc), I find that if I buy Sainsburys fuel I consistently get a couple of MPG less than if I buy BP or Shell. When this happened to start with I spent ages trying to find a problem as my MPG had suddenly dropped, then it fixed itself and I realised the connection with where I had been filling up...... Of course YMMV.

there was a huge thread on this subject a while back.
My A4 Avant Sport (235 tyres can't help) 1.9TDi AVF car with 160k does at best 47, long run to cornwall and back lightly loaded with cruise set at 75mph (72mph true speed from sat nav). DIS is consisitantly reading 5% high, I often get over 50 on the DIS. Mostly i get 42-43. Worst is 36, towing 1000kgs at sensible speeds (65mph)
