    Hi all,

I bought my Audi A4 1.8T Cab around a month back and so far it has been in good condition with few minor issues.
However this morning when driving, I lost full accelleration in auto mode. I changed to the manual gear change mode, and I had power again.
Since then my Auto mode returned and working.

I know I have a gearbox issue as when stopping and starting, it jumps a little and shudders.

What can I do about this issue?
I know its over 1k to get it replaces exc garage costs.

Would it best to buy warranty for the car and get it replaced on there?

    Thanks

£1K to get the box replaced! And the rest, you are talking at least £3k for a cheap rebuild and £5K+ for and Audi exchange unit. First of all get the box scanned for fault codes and see what comes up.

If it is the gearbox, can I buy warranty for the Audi and get it done on there for cheaper?

It depends on the warranty you buy, if it is one that only covers mechanical breakdown probably not as they exclude wear and tear. A lot of warranties can be quite daunting as the company instruct the garage to take out the box and strip it down, laying all the parts out on a bench and then they send an inspector around (sometimes two days later) to approve the repair. If he says no, all the work done and subsequent re-assembly is at your cost, quite a scary prospect.

Do you know of any companies that provide warranty which would cover this?
I was looking at warrantywise and it states it includes the gearbox within the warranty and upto 7k (I can choose between 1k-10k) per charge to the warranty company.
Not sure how it all works as I am new to it, but seems good if all I have to pay is around £700-£800 a year?

Well I would certainly not tell the company you already have a problem as doing what you are planning on doing is technically insurance fraud. I hate ALL warranty companies; every one I have ever dealt with has been a pain. Also you may find that the repairer will not release the car when the work is finished until they have received payment so I would check on this first. In my experience the owner has to pay the bill and recover the money from the warranty company and I have seen that take 3 months.

Although my experience was not with a gearbox, it was with a closely related part. Had DMF failure on a Golf and did manage to get it done on warranty but as Crasher stated, i had to pay the bill in full ( A shade under £1k, had the clutch done at same time) Then i wrote a letter with all the info etc sent it in the post and just hoped for a reply, and to my suprise they did actual pay out, but it took a couple of months, byt which time i thought it was a lost cause.

Taking about warranties, I've recently bought one from Warranties Direct, who do offer wear and tear cover, the cost for mine was about £370 for 12 months. However a claim can't be made in the first 3 months, this is to ensure that they aren't taking on any existing problems. They do allow payments to be made over 4 months and this doesn't affect your cover.
