I have a 2005 “55” Passat TDI which requires a fair amountof TLC. I could do with some help withtroubleshooting the problem and hopefully get the car back in great condition.

    1. Electronic hand brake does not work at all. I’vetried the reset method but had no luck with them. The error codes I have for this are as follows:

00446 Function limitations due to under voltage lower limitreached. Intermittent

02443 Control Head Electrical Problem Circuit

    2. Airbag faulty warning light.

01217 Side airbag igniter driver side (N199) Upper limitreached

    3. ABS light comes on after driving 100 yards orso. The brakes kind of grind before the light comes on but braking seems toreturn to normal after warning light

    4. ESP light is always on and not able to switch itoff. Not sure if it is just me but thecar feels like it slips slightly under heavy acceleration

    5. There is a clunking sort of noise when movingoff with the steering on full lock. Not sure if it’s a CV gaiter/Driveshaft orif there are any other common issues I need to look at

I probably need to get the car back on a computer so I cansee if the ESP and ABS have any faults listed on them but the garage I usedwere kind of useless and didn’t really know where to look under their Snap onSolus. Would any Vagcom be able to gointo greater detail?

So a few issues there and having a look around it seems theEHB seems to be common and most complicated/expensive to resolve. If anyone could help or pass any wise wordsof wisdom, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Can help with some

1 - Go for a new dashboard switch first.

2 - 3 - 4 Possibly related with brake faults, but check wires under seats if the plug is off or has been off, and also check behind the radio panel where it says airbag, if any of these wires have been disconnected you will get the lamps on, needs Vagcom to reset these.

5 - Look behind the wheels for heavy grease and splits in the boots

You need a proper VCDS code read. The snap-on read you have is a waste of time.

I'm hoping to have the car up on a ramp tomorrow so we can inspect any problems with gaitors and driveshaft etc.

Will a proper VCDS reader give the same errors or go into more depth? An auto electrician i know is away for the weekend but he'll have all the right equipment so hoping to get it on one of his machines once he's back

I'll pick up a switch on tuesday and attempt it. Does the switch fail as often or more than the motor that i've read so much about?

The early switches seem ripe for failure, and in fact the replacement that you will buy from a dealer is a modified part. At a touch over £20, its a cheap starting point as a potential cure for one of your problems.

I've never used VCDS myself, but have seen some of the information it provides, and it is incredibly in depth - armed with the right codes from VCDS, you will be able to post them here and the experts (Martin, Crasher etc) will almost certainly be able to help you solve your problems

Managed to get a quick update today. The car was due an MOT today so popped it along to the garage

The guy at the test station i know fairly well so he was happy to plug in his computer and run a check on it. Again a snap on system, but with the latest updated software. Plus he knew what he was doing unlike the last garage.

He tested the EHB via the machine and it was opening and closing the calipers. Purchased a new switch from VW and problem solved! Touch over £25 so i'm delighted. Seems the early switches are no good indeed

He's also recommended to replace the front wishbone bushes as there is a lot of play in both wishbones. Could this put the geometry out of sorts and cause the ESP light to be on? Any part numbers available for these?

I also need a new spring as the old one has cracked. I will be putting the car on a VCDS but it may not be until the weekend.

I've attached some shots of the new codes i have if it means anything to anyone.

It will help everyone if you could type out what's on the machine into a new post, it hurts my neck trying to read these!

When you have try looking up them here on Ross Tech's wiki page.

    http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...ry:Fault_Codes
    Codes are as follows:

00287 ABS Wheel speed sensor, Rear Right - G44 Not A Plausible Signal. Intermittent
01423 Lateral Acceleration Sensor (G200) Not A Plausible Signal

00778 Steering Angle Sensor (G85) No or Wrong Adaptation

01487 Not A Plausible Signal. Intermittent
01316 ABS Control Module Read Trouble Codes

01217 Side Airbag Igniter Driver Size (N199) Upper Limit Reached

An another note, when i insert the key, i sometimes have to wiggle it around to get ignition on. Is this a sign of a faulty cluster, key or switch?

I would disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Drive round the block. Get all codes cleared and see what come back.
The key problem is usually the start of a faulty steering lock problem. VW do a £300 fix now. It used to be £1000 plus.
