Just removing the front of my 2.4 v6 AGA engine to change the cam belt.

Cannot find the hole for the cam locking pin 3242

Picture I have is useless as it has no reference point, and as the front is in the service position rather than removed I cannot see very well round the front of the engine.

You appear to be changing the cam belt without a manual, this could end in tears. Regards Peter

Job done, many thanks a8 tech, I have the manual Peter, but could not make out the location of the plug from the picture. Was looking at the wrong part of the engine.

To be honest it would be pretty impossible without it, just to locate all the bolts etc.

Managed to rent all the tools which made it a lot easier, though Audi should include a mirror as an essential component as that got used more than the torgue wrench

Could not get the alignment tool on the cams originally as it looked like the right bank was one tooth out. Corrected it when fitting the bank and now it pulls much better from low revs.

So either the belt stretched a lot over the last 70,000 miles, or the last garage did not have the correct tools and counted teeth instead.

Anyway she now runs smoother than ever, and I am sure my fuel economy will be better.

Was amazed how good the waterpump looked at 155,000, and from the bills it has never been changed before.

Decided it was too hopefull for it to go another 70K , so that got changed with the thermostat.

Hi Lonky or anyone else who can help. I know it was a while ago when you did your change. I am about to do a cambelt/water pump/thermostat change on my 2002 Allroad 2.5TDi AKE after 145,000 - it will be it's second change. I have read eslewhere about not being able to install the cam lock tools. In your case, how did you rotate the right hand bank? I am assuming you had the crankshaft and left camshaft locked, pulled the left hand cam sprocket to remove the belt and then rotated the right cam until the camshaft lock tool could be inserted (-ie. timing now set correctly??) and then pulled the right sprocket????
I am hoping the Audi garage correctly set the timing at the 75k change and I won't run into this issue!
Also, I have a cambelt kit sourced from Audi. Any recommendations on what water pump (plastic or metal impeller?), thermostat and V-Belts I should go for?
    Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem. You just have to lock the crank, pop the cam pulleys off and then fit the cam tools. Once you get your mind around the whole adjustable vernier cam pulley thing and away from the tipex dots it's so much eaiser. Just follow the manual, check then recheck the timing and you'll be fine.

You lock the crank position with the locking tool before putting the alignment tool on the camshafts to set them.

you then tighten up the central nut to lock the positon with the belt in place.
