We went to the dealers today and my wife signed away her Motability allowance on a new Golf Estate! I'd test driven a few cars before going for the Golf, we've had Skodas for the past 10 years but the Fabia is too small (we have to fit a wheelchair in the back), Roomster not economical enough at speed and the Octavia too expensive, so we'd whittled it down to the Golf, C'eed, Focus and Megane estates, the latter two went simply because I didn't like the interior dash and the engine/box on the Focus, but the decision between the other two was a lot closer...

What finally decided it was the DSG 'box on the Golf, I originally wasn't going to get an auto but as the fuel consumption looks very close to the manual I decided we could run to one so we went in to the dealer today to finalize things...

They actually had an unregistered car in which had been ordered by a previous customer who then cancelled when faced with a 6 month wait and in the mean time the car arrived... So we've got that one, which will now have to sit for two months until our current lease is up... Very frustrating!!

Spec wise its a standard SE with the 1.6 TDi 105bhp and 7 speed DSG box in Tempest Blue... I'll now have to find out how to drive it best for economy...

    Welcome to the forum.

Thats sounds ok the biggest thing is you don't have to wait upto 6 months for it to be built. The only other thing is does the wife like Tempest Blue?

Yes, we knew that it would be a long waiting time, so this car coming out of the blue (!), to the right spec and just down the road was, to put it mildly, rather handy!

There's only a small number of colours for the Estate and my wife and daughter had already picked that colour as the one they wanted before we heard of the car...

There is only a small number of colours for any model VW there are 9 for the Golf yet VW have done 36 for the Golf. Golf Colours. In the States they only have 7 to choose from.

The Tempest Blue looks a darker blue than mine and thats too dark for me?

The other thing that surprises me is they only offer the 1.6 TDI for the estate not the 2.0 TDI?

Motability insist that all their cars are in metallic colours which limits the number of colours even more! We didn't want grey or black so the blue was the only other colour available on the estates in the UK!

The 2l is available but outside my price range...

I think the colour is secondary really, more important is the reliabilty of the car. Sorry to hear that you will have to wait for a couple of months before you get your hands on the car, but I think it will be worth the wait. There can be little niggles with the Golf, but can't the same thing be said for any make of car. I have learnt more about the Mk6 via the forum than reading the handbook, so it is thanks to many people who have taken the trouble to point out problems and tips to improve the ownership of the Golf.
That said, I hope you and your wife enjoy your new aquisition, never get paranoid about things as no car is perfect. But speaking for myself and although I have a different model to you, have had no real problems whatever, mayhaps I have only done 15000 miles.
But one 'heads up' if you are fitted with Continental tyres, expect the fronts to go at around 12000 miles, and it will not be due to poor driving but the nature of the rubber.

You can get the 2.0TDI in SE and Sport trim...according to their website.

On another note, I really like colour 21.

Exactly why I joined up, I've been a member of Briskoda for quite a few years and someone on there recommended this forum!

Re the price, Motability are quite strange when it comes to pricing, the Bluemotion versions, for instance, are very high compared with the standard versions, but I'm quite happy with the advance payment on this particular model, which is the one I'd have gone for anyhow... I've never driven like a boy racer, as long as it'll do 90mph or so on the Autobahns when we're on hols then it'll be ok!

I originally wasn't going to get an auto but as the fuel consumption looks very close to the manual
The consumption on the DSG is better than the manual because in use the DSG will return figures close to the published figures while the manual would need the most expert driver to replicate what the DSG box can do, so is inherently a bit thirstier. For the same reason the car with DSG box is faster, to the point where you have to observe some finess with your right foot on take offs if you wish to observe some decorum . The DSG box is easier on the engine too as it upchanges at 2000revs in each gear, the manual with 6 gears all closely spaced makes for a tendency to rev much higher on upchanges, this also effects fuel consumption.

Wow what a change to hear a story about quick delivery ... especially on a Golf diesel estate.

I ordered mine in the second week of February and am looking at delivery in second half of September!

Nothing special about my order, 1.6tdi, SE, DSG and Bluemotion; all bog simple out of the catalogue options, but when added together seems like I was looking for hens teeth!

Only a month to wait now!
Golf Estate, 1.6D, SE, Bluemotion, DSG, 15,000 + miles in 6 months, all going well
