My 1.8 b5 passat seems slugish and unresponsive. When i pull away from a standing start i get a slight rumbling from the engine, also at speed if i take my foot of the gas she seems to give a kick.Small misfires from cold and generally not very nice to drive.Once up to temp if i hold the revs at 1200 she misfires and the revs go up and down continually, also driving down a hill no load on engine and at 1200 she seems to cangeroo when driving. If i drive her hard things get a little better ,seems like a fuel air intake prob to me.I live within the surrey area and would appreciate any help.

Could be a lot of things, from coil-packs to engine speed-sensor.

Need to start with a code-read

    Regards

    Thanks Yaman,
May well invest in a reader with a view to buying another vw in the future but my faith in vw is diminishing.

    Hi Crasher,
The passat is a 1998 model, and an ADR engine.

Coil pack/lead issues are common on this engine.

Is there a fault code for coil/leads ?
Can i just say this missfire only seems to be when the throttle is just slightly open.I'm a carb man myself and this just seems to point to air/mixture to me.When i start from cold you get small bumps and miss-fires and when it's warm just now and then. When the throttle is only just partially open the revs go up and down and missfires.
I wish i could go to my local vw franchise but had too many bad experiences there.!!!
A reputable garage near Camberley for a diagnosis would be great.

No the ADR will not recognise any HT circuit faults in the ECU’s diagnostics. I wonder if it is a broken inlet manifold flap actuator. Pop the cover off and check.

    Then check the arm
