VW Bora brake pads and discs

My Bora has recently had its first service at a VW dealer after 2 years and 13000 miles. I was told the front brake pads were worn and the discs corroded so I agreed to their replacement at a cost of over £200. Friends have subsequently told me I've been 'mugged'. There were no other indications of brake problems. Any comments particularly re expected lifespan of these parts?

£200 from a VW dealer is probably about right as the labour is charged at some silly rate....

Discs shouldn't be corroded after 13,000 miles (or 2 rys) and if they are they should be replaced F.O.C. in my opinion.

Bora's have discs on all four conrners so why aren't the back ones corroded. (ps i know the front 1's take most of the grunt)

Youu could probably DIY for around the £80 mark.

Think you have been had - if the car is still under warranty and the discs are corroded - suggest you might have a warranty claim. I know they are wear and tear items but they shouldn't go after such a short time or distance.

My good lady is having her front discs and pads done at a specialist she uses in Louth, Lincolnshire and including VAT it only comes to £150 - and the parts are genuine VW. Her Bora has just passed the 130k mark and I think this is only will be the third set of brakes on her car (averaging approx 50-60k a set)

It is usually the rear discs that corrode due to light breaking and lack of use. Heavier use of the front discs causes wear, not corrosion so the previous comment is right, why should the front ones be corroded and not the back.
"You need new discs sir" is a common ripoff line after new pads and of course shock absorbers. (they have often sprayed around with an oil can to make them look as if they have leaked as well.
