Will VCDS Lite be compatible with my 56reg MK5 golf?

All i need from a diagnostic system is to be able to read fault codes without having to pay a garage just to plug it in. I'm not really interested in any of the advanced features so it wouldn't be worth me buying the complete vag-com program just yet.

If it is compatible with my car which cable will i need?

    Thanks for any help/advice.

No, iot is not. You'll need a current version of VCDS, the basic hardware you could get would be a Micro-CAN.
