On the way to work this morning the number plate bulb warning came on but then disappeared which was odd so I pressed the check button and it displayed the symbol which said MPH with a number 1 in the top left and froze on that and then disappeared. It didn't do the rest of the checks.
Then every minute or so it would beep and show the symbol for 10 seconds or so and then disappear.
The number plate lights were fine and didn't flicker or anything when shutting the boot as I know they are prone to corroding inside.

Made a 40 minute trip after work and then another 15 minute trip with the lights on and no more warnings. The test button is working again.

    Thats a check speed button,

e.g. if you press it when you are doing 30 miles an hour, if you accelerate 10% over that speed, e.g. 33 MPH, the car beeps at you to say you are going faster than the speed you set it at, I think you can press it again and save a second speed check.

I cannot remember how to cancel the speed check, it says in the manual.

You have to have the handbrake on in order to conduct the system check, brakes, battery, water level, oil etc..

Yeah I think you've set the speed warning alarm. You have 2 of them they can be set using the check button I think. That's why the symbol appears because the speed limit has been breached

Ah thanks that explains it. I have used the check button before while driving but in those cases I was probably stopped at a junction at the time.

    Agreed - speed limit alarm.

to cancel it, hold the check button for a few seconds and a speed limit sign appears with a line through it - cancelled.
