I have been experiencing what I think to be a problem with my turbo. The engine seems to run fine however the turbo boost is considerably reduced and does not perform as it should. I have taken the turbo/manifold to see if there was anything obviously damaged that might be causing the problem. But nothing obvious is apparent. If im honest I do not really know what im looking for so I am a bit lost with this one.

I have spoken to a turbo specialist in my area who told me to check the spindle in the turbo for movement, saying that some side to side movement was ok but back to front movement was not. I have looked and tested for any movement and neither ways have excessive, if any movement in. He went on to say that is could be something to do with the 'crack case breather' saying it could do with a clean, but I do not know what this is and cannot seem to loacate it on my engine. Another thing he said is that it could also be something to do with the EGR system but again im lost with this.

Please Im asking for some help and advise as Im a bit lost with all this now and dont want to spend the earth getting a specialist to look at it, well at least not before attempting to diagnose and fix myself.

Hi, try checking all vacuume pipes for leak in the engine bay. These are the small pipes which go to turbo and EGR. If not you will need to check what the turbo presure is, this has to be done with diag machine. Hope this helps

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have checked all that and the only problem is on the small hose going into the inlet manifiold / EGR valve, this however has always been the case and has not cause this problem. Ive laso looked at the metal pipe going from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve which does not appear to be damaged.

Do you know what the 'crack case breather' and where it is located in the car?

CCB something to do with the exhaust? if the turbo seems fine - might be a clutch problem? i have the same car and my intercooler is dripping oil, which is giving me less MPG than it should (high 30s round town), and slighlty less performance

No its not a clutch problem. And the oil dripping from the intercooler is pretty normal, i had it doing the same on mine for several years, with little affect to the the mpg and performace. I have been led to believe that this is a problem with an oil seal or something to do with the oil cooling of the turbo charger. Its happens because when you switch off the car you should realy let the car 'wind-dwon' allowing the turbo to slow rpm with the oil cooling system still runing. Over years of not doing so this will lead to this problem.
