Just bought 2011 model Polo GTi and it has a rattle in engine bay noticeable with windows open. Took it back to dealer who said it was normal and was something to do with 'forks' on the 'double clutch' mechanism of DGS gearbox rattling. Is this really 'normal'? Has anyone else got the same issue? I am a bit bemused why VW would sell the car with such a rattle!!

I doubt it. Sounds like they're fobbing you off. However, I have heard of a pipe in the engine bay, to do with the aircon I believe, coming adrift and rattling. Try another dealer maybe?
    2002 Polo 9n 1.2 65PS. Basic but it's better than the train!

It is a known feature of the DSG gearbox, however reports so far seem to show that it's noise 'on the move', not stationary. There's lots of threads on this - especially SEAT's with DSG's.

I wouldn't have thought the gearbox would 'rattle' at idle unless the tickover was very lumpy?

Definitely check the pipe right at the back of the engine bay. Mine would rattle when the car was under load (such as when pulling away) and it was loud and extremely annoying. It's caused by a metal pipe (air con I think) popping out from a metal retaining clip and it resting against it. Just push it back in - mine has stayed in since.
