Spec'ing up my next company car. It's going to be a Golf Match but looking at optional extras.

Saw park assist and have looked at the Youtube videos to see what it is all about - I expected it just to be giving guidance, not doing the parking for you.

It looks very impressive especially as it is only £90 (well on the Match it is) and seems a no brainer.

But then second thoughts came in. Would I use it? - I don't often parallel park and when I need to, I can and in much bigger cars than the Golf. Would I trust it? - I know that the driver still has to control the throttle and can override but even so you are putting a lot of faith in the technology (and I'm certain that VW will wash their hands should there be an accident).

So anyone here got it? What do you think, do you use it regularly or is it just a gimmic to show to friends now and then?

    Cheers,

    Nigel

    Your thoughts are correct.

I find that spotting a parking place, switching the device on, activating the indicators, cruising past at the required speed, moving forward until the display is happy, waiting for the instructions and resisting the temptation to help is all too much of a faff. So I don't use it. Park Assist, like the rear camera is a gimmick, unlike the front and rear sensors that really do help.

However, as you point out it's only £90, I think it might help at selling/trade-in time.

    Thanks for the info.

As it is a company car the resale price is of no consequence to me. I get charged for any options both as a monthly cost and as company car tax and over the 3 year period end up paying more than the cost of extra. I don't see any benefit when I hand it back.

So I think I'll pass on Park Assist.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

I disagree about the rear camera. I still miss it in my Golf.
My last car had one, and our family car does.
Every weekend when I drive the Pathy I think 'wow, that camera is great, I wish I had one in the Golf'.
Golf Match 2.0 tdi 140 Bluemotion tech, fogs, folding mirrors. Reversing camera didn't make it, so enjoying DAB.

Other motor is a Nissan Pathfinder.

I have to agree about the comments on the Park Assist - it does work, but only aligns itself with the car in front/behind - so you can't rely on it to not scuff your wheels, and it takes far too long to activate, as opposed to parking it yourself.

I have to disagree with the camera comment as Hugheseynights has said - the camera has been brilliant - brilliant to parallel park/reverse park with, one option I don't think I could do without in my next car.

Is the camera part of Park Assist or a different option?

Assuming it is, can you use the camera indepently of Park Assist - just general reversing for example.

Camera is the option or standard on the Match
If you pick the RCD 510 it comes instead of the DAB you can not have both with the RCD510 but it worth the money if you dont want DAB

The RCD 510 is standard on the Match, including 6 CD Changer, DAB and MDI. Are you saying that if I select Park Assist then the DAB gets deleted. It doesn't say that on the online configurator, nor in the brochure.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

No if you select rear view camera then DAB is deleted as video module replaces the DAB Module

I am not sure on Park Assist I suspect it still has DAB down load the Manual and price list this shows it better than configurator

A little clearer and a little more confused.

Had a look at the brochure (don't have the price list) and then suggests the rear view camera is a different option to Park Assist. It also says

    replaces the DAB
not available on BlueMotion Technology vehicles

    That all seems clear.

But, there is no option of 'rear view camera', just 'park assist'. Park Assist does not say it has a camera, nor does it say it removed the DAB plus you can select it with BlueMotion Technology vehicles.

So I'm still unsure whether Park Assist does include the camera or not.

    Cheers,

    Nigel
