Guys, I am presently an owner of a 2001 VW Passat 1.9TDI 130 Estate which, to be honest, is a cracking car. I have been thinking of a change and have made a few posts on the VW site about newer Passats, but there seem to be inherant injector and wiring loom issues with them.

I have seen a 04 2004 A4 Avant 2.5 V6 TDI Quattro Sport 180, with 79k, 6 speed, timing belt, tensioners, pump etc just done with a FSH for, give or take £6.5k. I am looking for some general advice please. Is this a good car/model, are there any major issues with these, are they thirsty etc etc.

I guess I am looking for some guidence from people who know rather than go blindly into a money pit. Thanks in advance.

We have an03 SE and an 04 Triptonic Sport both just over 100k and would say this seems a fair price for a low mileage Avant .The extras are important as they were expensive and desirable so check these cos they make a diff. The 2.5 is much different to a 1.9 which we had before the Auto and the Quattro more so .Obviously thirstier but if thats acceptable more rewarding and 4WD is great.Make sure it stars quickly hot and cold the retiming after a belt change is tricky and one of ours was well out when the belt was done again but now starts well. There are many fans of the 2.5Tdi Quattros on here and some top advice available

Nice find at 79k, im on 130k now and must say they are a verynice car to drive, My previous car was also a 1.9 passat so can honestly say the fuel economy isnt brilliant in comparison, around 40mpg on the motorway and down to low 30's in town, everything in the parts department seems to be more heavily priced, higher taxand servicing bills, all four tyres wear out not just the fronts anymore, The high pressure fuel pumps can fail around the 150k mark and could be as much as £1200 to sort at audi your a way off yet. Atuning box or a remap will take you upto 220hp and improve the economy. They can be a bit of a shock to run in comparison but you get what you pay for and you do get a much better and more powerful engine. The four wheel drive tops it off superbly. All this aside every model suffers from its issues, A must check is to check if it was on a long life servicing plan,i.e. oil changed every 20k. if i were looking at one and it was on this plan i would say no thanks,i have read about to many on this that suffer premature cam wear resulting in a £2000+ bill. i bet this sounds a complete nightmare but do your homework and if its a good motor go for it you will love it
