Hello, I am new on here.
    I have an A4 B6 1.9 Tdi 130, 5 speed manual.

    The problem I have is this;
I cannot select gears with the engine running, the lever just feels stiff when you push for a gear.
    There is no crunching.
You can select a gear with the engine off and start up with the clutch pedal down.
It does not feel like the clutch is dragging.
The car will set off normally but you cannot then shift into another gear.
You can get to neutral ok, but that is all.
I have just over 200k miles on the clock and the clutch has not been changed.
The pedal is quite a way up when the clutch starts to bite.
    Any ideas what is wrong?
Do I have to bite the bullet and change the clutch or is something else causing this?
    Anny advice appreciated,
    Thanks.

Did this happen suddenly? If so its unlikely to be the clutch if it still disengaging and engaging to pull away.Could be the synchro. We have a Bora with 165k and the clutch is fine but changing up is aneffort sometimes at higher revs .It will change down easily everytime so I think it is wear in part of the synchro which will need attention if it gets worse

    It happened suddenly, yes.
I don't know exactly what happened because Mrs Tea was driving it.
She could not get it into reverse to get up the drive.
I am not sure on the synchro because you can't get it into any of the gears.
Would be odd if all synchros went suddenly and at once?

I would say its your thrust bearing maybe worn down,or the hydraulics gone ,200k on it,its time for a change.

I can now get the gears.
I ended up fitting clutch, dmf, slave cyl and clutch arm.
As a whilst you are in there I did a wheel bearing, cv joint on one side and cv boot on the other.
I also found the flexible pipe on the cat was leaking. As the rest of the part was ok I got a new flexible bit from http://http://exhaustpartsuk.com/ which I welded in.
I set off to test it and got to the bottom of the drive when the brake warning light came on.
    Always something to do!
