Hi i have recently acquired a Transporter which is currently stuck in limp mode, i scanned the vehicle using a snap one modus scanner and i got coolant temp sensor and also the code:

00539- Fuel temperature sensor- G81 open circuit/short with power intermittent.( presuming the sensor needs replacing)

I have replaced the coolant temperature sensor and is all working fine , i have tried locating the fuel sensor but cannot seem to find this, Does anyone now where it is located and if so is it easy to access.

Details of vehicle the engine is in:

    Volkswagon transported
    2.5 tdi
    1997 plate
    T4 model

If anyone could help me or send me a simple diagram where it is located. Thanks in advance

The fuel temperature sensor G81 is in the fuel pump, the part number is 028 906 040 C and they cost just under £20. Officially VW say that the pump has to be replaced to change the sensor BUT if you have the special Bosch 0 986 612 605 D socket tool AND you know how to rest the Injected Quantity in Measuring blocks 001 zone 2, then you can change the sensor.

I have changed the fuel temperture sensor in the top of the pump but cant seem to get fuel to the injectors is this because it needs recoding to pump? upon scanning with a snap on modus scanner it puts no codes up, where do i go from here?

I have replaced the sensor now and doesnt seem to start , do the parameters have to be reset or is it a simple case of air in the fuel lines?

You have to get the cover back on as close as possible but getting them to start after can take some serious cranking. Give it a gentle sniff or two.

ok thanks , i'll retry today with a fresh battery ,

If people didnt know you can flip you front end down by undoing the intercooler bolts and 2 13 bolts which enables the front to flip down on its hinges. this then makes the top of the pump easily accessible
