My 1996 A6 Avant 1.9 TDI has developed a noticeable clunk from the front end, mainly when turning the steering, especially noticeable when first pulling away. Sounds like it's coming from the left side, but difficult to be certain.
First I thought it was the strut-top spring bearing, but I replace that to no avail.
Just today replaced both front ARB inner bushes where it mounts on the sub frame, no difference though.
Not so long ago, I replaced the lower arms and damper inserts, now planning to replace ARB outer bushes where fixed to lower arms.
Just can't work out what's causing it, on inspection I can't find any play anywhere.

    Any ideas welcome !

    Thanks

My A4 does the same and my dads a6 also does this, normally only when going over a bump, its the front drop links, they are very cheap to buy, about a tenner I think.
I find myself its just easier to turn the stereo up, as I'm too lazy to change mine. lol

I had mine changed last week on my car, and on the bill they are called link rods, the garage said you can buy a kit with the bolts, and now its lovely and quiet.
I wouldn't think it would be much different, my A4 is a 1995 1.6, but my father has a 1994 A6 avant and it makes an identical clunk

OK it's a problem with the road spring, possibly the top bearing is not turning properly, which is odd because I changed the bearing last year. I'm going to have to remove the strut to take a look at it.
Looks like quite a big job.
