I have just the same issue with my 2.0 golf gt tdi BKD engine code, ever since i bought my car (Fed 2010) it has had the "Emissions Workshop" - EM light on. To be honest with it has not caused me any issues (even with the fan fuse blown and the fans not working, stuck in traffic on a hot summers day in the New forest my temp gauge just moved a tad over half way, rectified by turning on the heater).

I have considered replacing the faulty part myself however every time I decided to do it I found something better to spend my money on.
I know people here will say that it should be replaced asap however my friend has a Audi A3 (same BKD engine) and he has done 230K miles in his car with this issue being present for the last 120K miles.

It's a strange issue because every time I turn my engine off I can hear the flap operating.

Audi Tech, You have never heard of an anti shudder flap! Never mind, if you read ELSA you will see the text “The intake manifold flap is closed for approx. 3 seconds when stopping engine and then opens again. This reduces the stop jolt.”. This is where the commonly used description comes from and there are 120 references to it on this forum but not all for the BKD engine.

Anyway, failure of the Regulator Flap (VAG parts department terminology) or Intake Manifold Flap motor (VAG workshop manual terminology) is extremely common. It also has an SDC code (Service Diagnose Code) of V157, the V stands for Elektromotoren.

    It looks like this,

The VW part number for this is now 038 128 063 L but it was 038 128 063 G up until 01/04/2008. For cars up to early 2008 models (roughly cars produced up until January 2008) it changed to 038 128 063 M.

The part is also available from other manufacturers including the original factory supplier Pierburg under their number 7.14393.26.0, confusingly Pierburg don’t change the part number for post January 2008 production cars.

Pierburg call it a Control Flap or Regulating Throttle whilst other suppliers call it a Throttle body.

This is a good description of what it does and shows that VW saying they have never come across it before as being very suspect.

    https://onlineshop.ms-motor-service.com/static_content/msi_pdf/tinfo/pg_si_0095_en_web.pdf

This part is easily available for a good saving over VW’s price from companies such as German Swedish and French.

The fuse that blows is number 8 (behind the relay with the red arrow) up to 2006 and thereafter fuse 24 (green arrow) in the under bonnet fuse box.

This fuse also shuts down the fan controller as mentioned which will also affect the air conditioning when the vehicle is not moving. I have studied the responses of the Golf 5 temp gauge and for it to move over 90 on the gauge the actual temperature of the engine can be around 117°c, never trust ANYTHING a modern VAG temperature gauge tells you.

Go to your local vw dealer and ask them for an INTAKE MANIFOLD FLAP MOTOR, they will ask you for your chassis no etc so they will get you the correct one, for a cheaper option you can try your local spurious parts dealer but the intake manifold flap motor may be vw parts only!!!

wdroberts/Buzzoff- I have the exact same problem- did you ever get yours resolved? If so how?

Car is BKD engine code, just done 50k miles and 'emissions workshop' fault appears on dash. As previously stated by others car still runs fine- no difference.

Crasher- your comprehensive 'how to' guide covers it, I take it swapping the fuse out after following the full process would then cancel the dash warning light...? Or is that a trip to dealers (£85 just to plug into laptop just to diagnose fault!!...)

    thanks
    Paul

I have lived with the issue for over 20K miles now with no issues so far (famous last words). Like I posted before at the moment I have got better things to spend my time and money on however I probably will replace the anti shudder valve before winter (will source the part from either gsf or euro which ever will do the best deal for me).

Regarding the MIL display I thing that once you replace the faulty part the lifgt should go out but will still have a code lodged in the ecu memory.

    Cheers dude

Have it fault code read, it will probably show a manifold flap motor problem and a fan controller issue depending on the year. Have the flap motor replaced and the appropriate fuse. The light MAY not go out unless the fault is cleared, it varies.
