Hi i have a 1993 2.0 16v coupe and the rev counter is not working and the oil light comes on if the car is reved or when the cars cold and the pressure is high. I have looked at the earths and the alternator wires and it all looks ok so I'm assuming that the 2 problems are unrelated, I can get a new pressure switch but don't know where to start with the rev counter. Would appreciate any ideas.

    Cheers stu

Cheers, iv had a look and it's effectively the rev counter is a pulse meter, I'm not to hot on electrics so looks like I'm going to get it looked at. I will fit a new oil pressure switch myself.

    Cheers for the reply

Reading some of the similar threads, I would get the alternator checked out?

I had a look at the the wireing as it's pretty minimal and it all looks ok and all the connections seem ok, or do I need an auto electrician to have a look at it plus the oil pressure light is only on when the engine is cold or when revved so it's got to be the high pressure switch, if it was the alternator wouldn't the light be on all the time or intermittently, not just when the pressure is high?

    Cheers stu

See the 'similar threads' listed at the bottom of your post, oil pressure alarms and rev counter failure seems to go hand in hand with alternator gremlins.
I'm not sure whether the high oil pressure switch should be 'made' or open, you could simulate either by shorting or disconnecting the wire. Chances are there will be no change, because the fault lies elsewhere.
As I understand it, the batt light will come on only if the voltage is low - i.e the alternator is not charging. This fault seems to related to the small wires from the altrnator or something internal. One of the other threads found a cure was to fit a valeo alternator in place of a Bosch one.

Fixed the problem. I cleaned up all the terminals then sprayed the whole alternator with wd40.

Just need a power steering pump now and the car will be back on the road. It's amazing what goes wrong when a car has been parked up and left for 5 years, have already fixed the rear lights that corroded and fitted a cv boot. On e the power steering pump is done I will be taking her for an mot.
