ok, now lets sort you out

first of all, a few questions,

    • what type of garage did you visit
    • what sort of code reader did they use? was it a generic or was it a vagcom/vag specific code reader?
    • when you say it goes into limp mode, at what point, is this rev specific or does it occur at any point?
    • are you noticing poor MPG, poor idle, poor running or any other faults?
if you can answer the above as fully as possible mate, ill try and help you out, i have a lot of experience with the fault you mention and i can always invite you down for a fault read/graph log of your car if we can't figure it out on here

p.s. no hard feelings, lets put it down to a mis-understanding

If its making a hissing noise it sounds like a boost leak.

firstly like to apologise i was a bit grumpy. the car pulls well in 1st and secong but 3rd and especially 4th seems to go on for quite a while and i think its 4th that it has done that going into limp mode ecery time.
its the only official vw place in grimsby, it was not vag com software they used but they did not specify what soft ware they used, they just told me it was a vw diagnostics test they was doing. it seems to cut out around the 3500 rev point rougly. do the turbos hiss alot as well. i also thought it sounds like a leak when the turbo seems to go flat.
its only done this limp mode 4-5times but it still feels a little flat for 150 bhp.
    hope that helps.
i see you description for doing the maf which looks very easy to change.
    thanks for the replies

ok, by official VW do you mean main dealership or independant mate?

if it wasnt vagcom they used then i doubt they'd be able to read the VW specific codes. brief explanation:

there are 2 main types of codes (feel free to correct) Generic and Manufacturer specific, generic codes are generally 4 digit codes, or those beginning with a P. VW specific codes are 5 digits, such as 17965.

although they may have read no fault with their code reader, if it is only a generic reader, it will not be able to recognise the VW specific codes.

if your turbo is going into limp mode (which it is from what you describe) there will certainly be at least one code, in relation to what caused the turbo to enter limp mode.

what i'd suggest is either getting a copy of vagcom and a lead, a VW specific scanner or getting to a specialist with the proper tools, to read the car properly and find out what codes you've got.

if you've got an overboost situation, it leans towards something in the turbo mechanism sticking.

underboost would suggest a leak to me.

they was a main dealership but it must of been a generic reader as it was definatly not the vag software.
what does it cost to get the vag com soft ware and how do you do it... do you need additional equipment, i would assume leads.
    i do have a laptop.
it would be nice if i lived near some one with this software.
this weekend though im going to check some things over like the n75 valve to make sure that rod moves when the car is reved.

i bought and fitted a maf but it has hardly made a difference although its probably a good idea to have a new one at 76k anyhow. this weekend i want to check all the hoses and make sure that n75 valve moves etc. should i disconnect the battery when i fit something like the maf or is that a waste of time.

I've heard a lot of the MAFs are faulty straight out of the box, so don't go assuming the MAF isn't staill at fault.

Ther was once a very wise man called Crasher who had three seperate MAFs fail one after an other.

    Good luck

    Nick
