    I have a VW passat tdi 130 2003 model.
Got a slight problem with the electric window on the offside. You can hear the motor trying to take the window up/down, however the window itself does not move unless you put your hand on it and manually move it down. When you have moved it down by hand, if you press the up button it will take the window up.

    any ideas, easy to fix?

It is relatively common for the wires to fray over time which leads to failure of the mechanism. This however is often accompanied by dreadful grinding noises that sound as if terrible damage is being done (it's not) so your simple failure may or may not be this.

I can't think of any way of telling what your problem is without dismantling the door card to have a look - it's not that difficult and there are plenty of descriptions of how to do this (sorry but I don't know of links off the top of my head but they won't be difficult to find). Have a good read about other peoples problems and solutions then have a go yourself. If it is the cables the repair kit costs about £20 odd from eBay and is satisfyingly straight forward to fit and the job takes about 1 hour-ish.

Motor seems ok it seems as if whatever secures to the window has come off as if I press the button to make the window go down you can hear it reach the stop point however the window has not moved unless you put your hand on it and move it down. It will bring the window back up however.

    Jimbo is spot on.

It sounds as though either the plastic clips have broken or the plastic dowel has come loose.

Here's a link to get you started.

Can I ask if this is I front or rear window unless I have missed this.
I recently had rear window issues simular.I understand this is common for the plastic plug that secures through a hole in the window glass too winding frame mechanism.it's like a plastic tube that pushes through hole then a smaller plastic piece pushes through the domestic guess to open it up slightly to grip.if it's a rear window this is possible.easily pushed back in ,bit fiddly but can be done without removal.
As for front Windows, regulator cable assembly common again, did one 2 times first with a replacement cable however it was awkward to get cable wound on spool and into mechanism housing .it broke in a few months despite it being cleaned and well lubricated to ease winding.
Next I bought the replacement unit from fleebay ,consisting of new cables ,mechanism mounting unit and rails where window runs up down via plastic runners.very easily fitted ,just drilled out rivvets and replaced with bolts not supplied.just watch bolt head clearance when placed in so as not to catch glass.tip grease up runners rails cables well.
I'm no expert no mechanic but wasn't too hard with unit.I'm sure too relevant May list used units to slot in with without glass.
Hope I'm on the right track and this helps ,atvb good luck.
