Vw beetle steering rack problem

hi all i need a new steering rack for my wifes beetle 1.6 petrol 2000 model will a golf or bora rack fit also or has it got to be a beetle, does it have to be a 1.6 petrol or will a diesel or bigger engine rack fit thanks in advance

There are a few rack numbers but most have gone to the same number now and it is used on the 98>2004 Golf 4 and pretty much all 1J platforms such as Leon, Octavia, A3 etc

In theory yes but I have never done it. When I fit a new rack I always order in the correct part according to the cross reference from VW to supplier’s number, in fact I usually use genuine racks as aftermarket recons can be appalling quality. If you want me to be more accurate I would have to establish the rack part number for your car and know the part number of the rack you wee intending to use.
