I also want to echo my thanks. I was diagnosed with terminal condensor and compressor failure on 2 different A4's - mine and the wife's. I also bit the bullet and took it into the main ******* - £55 diagnosis and surprise, suprise - its the pressure switch. They want £147 to supply and fit this, but it appears as though even i can do this one myself!!

suprise, suprise. bought the sensor, took out the passenger headlight, popped in the new switch, turned the key....i now have air-con again!

My next trip is to the guy who wanted me to spend £1000 on new compressors, condensors and labour. I hope he has a good explanation.

    Power to the little man.

    Hi there,

I have an AUDI A4 (B5)I'm trying to sort out what I think may be a similar problem here.

My A/C all seems to work, but the air does not get cold. Only ambient. It does get hot and the fan is all fine etc. (In fact I just fitted a new one)

I had the compressor recharged about 10 months ago, so I know it shouldn't be low...

I have checked the Climate Control OBD codes and it is showing a fault -
(F118) A/C Refrigerant High Pressure Switch, static open
    * Compressor remains off until switch closes.

Does anyone know if this relates to the same problem?

    Any help, really appreciated.

JooJooBeans - first off hi & welcome to the forum, i am not familiar with the Heating Control Panel in the B5 but i can say that the error i got pointed back to the High Pressure Switch, i changed it and hey-presto! The only way to know for Def is change it and see if it fixes your prob!

Well I have my system regassed as it was flat but "Econ" lamp is still on so it looks as though it is the pressure switch locking out the system.

Where is the switch can anyone advise, I regularly have the front off the car to change belts pumps tensioners coupligs etc so should be easy?

It happens to me as well and it turned out to be the high pressure switch or thrust sensor in Audi terminology.

Anyway, there is no need to take the headlight or front bumper off since you can easily view it at the left side of the radiator fan (if you are facing the engine) just below the driver's side headlight ( UK C5 models only i.e. 1998 to 2004 ).

Just bend the rubber cover secured by one screw only and you can view and access it, though it is a bit tricky to unscrew it.

However, for those who want to fully access it, just remove the front driver side headlight. I can confirm you that the headlight is secured with three bolts only - two on the top (T30) and one on the lower side by the fender. Note, there is a hole in the frame and you need to look deep down to see it as this one secures the bottom of the headlight casing.

Or get it done by a local garage since they have the right tools. Only a £10 - £15 jobs which takes few minutes.

    I hope this helps.

Hello from another new user.. Well its not clear that I have a high pressure switch issue based on reading this and the other forum... can someone point out on an A4 3.0 where the switch resides? I think its behind the left headlamp ( the driver's side over here)
    thanks
