    Hi all

Thinking out loud here.Would my 2001 A6 Quattro AKE clutch be DM or SM?

If it is DM is there a conversion out on the market to convert to SM?

Dual mass flywheel and matching sprung hub on clutch. Replace like for like, the v6 tdi is one of the strongest clutches you can buy for a stock car so if you have a prblem with it then you should change your driving style- either you're riding the clutch or parts not up to standard. I have a allroad wich i use for towing, is as good as the day i bought-it with no judder or slip.

DM's are specifically designed to dampen the reasonace of the cranksaft in conjuction with the anti vibration front pulley. Fitting a SM can and has led to a fractured crankshaft, add to that the increased vibration in the and a SM is just not worth it. Regards Peter

The reason I ask is I'm looking into getting a lightened billet SM flywheel. The clutch it self will be replaced with a standard LUK clutch for the AKE engine.

Diesels don't like lightened flywheels, keep it the same weight or heavier than the stock one and you won't have problems. Why do you wanna go SMF for ? The stock DMF is good for 500Nm all day long, failing that Sachs do a race SRE clutch which is 30% stronger. Add at least 20% over what they claim as Sachs are very conservative with their torque ratings and you have a strong clutch designed for a v6 tdi engine from the start and not fancy aftermarket tosh !

I would suggest that a lightened billet SM flywheel is not suitable, or of any advantage on a TDI engine. I would be very concerned as to the vibration of the engine. Regards Peter
